High-Amp Circuit Breakers 101

- Trip curve and nuisance trips: Consider inrush (motors, pumps, winches) and pick a breaker curve that tolerates start-up but trips on sustained overloads.
- Environmental rating and durability: Choose sealing, vibration, and ignition-protection appropriate to the location. Look for sealed/ignition-protected units where moisture, salt, dust, fuel vapor, or mud are present; and corrosion-resistant hardware such as stainless or nickel-plated studs.
- Mounting style: Surface-mount for battery protection, panel-mount for operator access. Place the breaker near the source (battery/alt feed) to minimize unprotected cable length; ensure clear access for reset and inspection.
- Reset style: Manual reset breakers are considered field-friendly, auto-reset breakers reclose after cooling, and switchable breakers combine circuit protection with an integrated on/off switching function, allowing manual control of the circuit without needing a separate switch.
Coordinating upstream and downstream devices ensures selective tripping, so only the affected circuit opens during a fault.
